In collaboration with Stad Brugge, KU Leuven, VLAIO, and local partners, this study explored how the Magdalenakwartier, a historic UNESCO listed neighborhood in Bruges, can transition toward a fossil free future while respecting its architectural heritage. Using several representative building types, from townhouses to protected monuments, the project developed circular renovation scenarios that balance technical feasibility, financial realism, and strict heritage regulations. Grounded in existing research on sustainable heat networks, energy zoning, and carbon conscious retrofitting of heritage buildings, each case examined spatial efficiency, envelope strategies, renewable energy integration, material choices, and both individual and collective heating solutions. Close coordination with heritage and planning authorities ensured that every proposed measure was legally and practically viable. The resulting illustrated scenarios serve as clear communication tools for residents and renovation advisors, making complex environmental, legal, and financial implications understandable, and offering a reproducible framework for future-proof renovation across Bruges’ historic inner city.
